A Billion Here, a Billion There; Reading the Economy When Managing Big Money

Ronald P. Joelson, Executive Vice President and Chief Investment Officer of Northwestern Mutual


Ronald Joelson is Executive Vice President and Chief Investment Officer of Northwestern Mutual. In this role, he oversees management of the company’s $176 billion general account investment portfolio, which is made up of public and private bonds and stocks, preferred stock, commercial mortgage loans and real estate equities. The general account portfolio supports the company’s surplus and its insurance and annuity products. Mr. Joelson is responsible for the company’s three investment subsidiaries: Mason Street Advisors, LLC; Northwestern Mutual Capital, LLC; and Northwestern Mutual Real Estate Investments, LLC. These subsidiaries invest the company’s managed assets in accordance with Northwestern Mutual’s investment policy. He also is a member of the company’s Management Committee. Prior to joining Northwestern Mutual in 2012, Mr. Joelson successfully managed investments for two global insurance companies. He served as Chief Investment Officer of Genworth Financial and managed the company’s $75 billion investment portfolio. He also served as Chief Investment Officer for Prudential Financial from 2000-07, where he spent the majority of his career and oversaw Prudential’s $230 billion general account. Mr. Joelson graduated from Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y., in 1980 with a bachelor’s degree in economics and government. He earned his M.B.A. in Finance and Accounting from Columbia University in New York City in 1983.

James D. Fields, Partner at Oliver Wyman


Jim Fields is a Partner with Oliver Wyman in the Health & Life Sciences practice. Mr. Fields is the Chicago Office Head and co-leads the Government Programs platform. Mr. Fields is a Healthcare Reform specialist at Oliver Wyman and has guided several companies in the development and implementation of Exchange strategies, Seniors strategies and new business launches. Mr. Fields works with health plans of all sizes, healthcare technology companies, health delivery systems, and companies looking to enter the healthcare sector. Prior to joining Oliver Wyman in 2002, Mr. Fields honed his experience in private equity and business consulting with a big five firm. Mr. Fields received his MBA from the Northwestern University’s J.L. Kellogg School of Management and holds an undergraduate degree from Ball State University. He serves on the Board of Evaluators for Ball State University’s nationally ranked Entrepreneurship Program.


David L. Kessenich, Managing Partner of Excellere Partners


David Kessenich has substantial private equity and investment banking experience. Prior to forming Excellere Partners, Mr. Kessenich was a Director and member of the investment committee of KRG Capital Partners, a middle-market private equity group. As a private equity investor, Mr. Kessenich has completed more than 50 acquisitions, including industry consolidations in the healthcare services, medical technology, life sciences, industrial technology and services, transportation logistics and energy services industries. Previously, Mr. Kessenich was an investment professional at SBC Equity Partners and Mason Wells. Prior to that, Mr. Kessenich was an investment banker with Continental Bank and Bank of America where he advised middlemarket companies. Mr. Kessenich received an MBA in Finance and International Business from The University of Chicago’s Graduate School of Business and a BSBA in Accounting and Finance from Creighton University. Mr. Kessenich currently serves on the board of directors of Integrated Petroleum Technologies, Medtech College/ Institute, Personable Holdings, PhyMed Holdings (d/b/a/ Anesthesia Medical Group) and U.S. Water Services. Mr. Kessenich previously served on the board of directors of Advanced Pain Management, AxelaCare Health Solutions, MedExpress Urgent Care, and MTS Medication Technologies prior to their sales.


Jennifer M. Mulloy, Managing Director at TA Associates


Jennifer Mulloy is a Managing Director in TA’s Menlo Park office focused on investments in healthcare and consumer companies. Prior to joining TA Associates in 1998, she was a healthcare investment banker at Robertson, Stephens & Company. Ms. Mulloy currently serves on the boards of Dutch and Twin Med, and is a Board Observer of Millennium Laboratories. Ms. Mulloy’s prior board seats include Alere Medical, Cypress Pharmaceuticals, National Imaging Associates, One Call Medical and Youth and Family Centered Services. Ms. Mulloy received an AB degree, with Honors, in Economics from Stanford University and an MBA degree from the Harvard Business School.

James A. Hughes, Chief Executive Officer of First Solar, Inc.


James Hughes joined First Solar in March 2012 as Chief Commercial Officer and was appointed Chief Executive Officer in May 2012. Prior to joining First Solar, Mr. Hughes served, from October 2007 until April 2011, as Chief Executive Officer and Director of AEI Services LLC, which owned and operated power distribution, power generation (both thermal and renewable), natural gas transportation and services, and natural gas distribution businesses in emerging markets worldwide. From 2004 to 2007, he engaged in principal investing with a privately held company based in Houston, Texas that focused on micro-cap investments in North American distressed manufacturing assets. Previously, he served, from 2002 until March 2004, as President and Chief Operating Officer of Prisma Energy International, which was formed out of former Enron interests in international electric and natural gas utilities. Prior to that role, Mr. Hughes spent almost a decade with Enron Corporation in positions that included President and Chief Operating Officer of Enron Global Assets, President and Chief Operating Officer of Enron Asia, Pacific Africa and China and as Assistant General Counsel of Enron International. Mr. Hughes is a Non-Executive Director of APR Energy plc, a London Stock Exchange-listed energy company participating in the global market for gas and diesel fired temporary power plants. Mr. Hughes holds a juris doctor degree from the University of Texas at Austin School of Law, a Certificate of Completion in international business law from Queen Mary’s College, University of London, and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Southern Methodist University.
